Math, LA, & DIY

This week Jayden has been learning how to multiply with more than one digit on top and bottom.

For some reason he was so excited to learn it.

Cait has mastered her +0 facts, +1 facts, and doubles facts (up to 10 + 10). She also learned to identify ordinal position to twelfth and can determine elapsed time (by one hour).

We borrowed the audio book of The Mysterious Benedict Society to help us along on car rides. It is an extremely long book, so the audio book has helped us a lot!

This week we reviewed capital letters, question marks, and exclamation points.

We also went over compound words & pronouns.

And finally, we had co-op day. Our theme was "Games". A few of us worked together to cut out interesting pictures from nature magazines. We then pasted them on card stock to make an "I Spy" game. 

Geography- Connecticut

We are working our way through the United States with Road Trip USA. The first region we are working on in is the Northeast region. Our first state is Connecticut. Jayden started us off by locating it on our wall map.

Then we moved on to our US Atlas. 

 

Caitlin used the coordinates on the grid to locate Hartford, CT.  

We read a few sections of this book about the lifestyle of people during Colonial Times, including food they ate (corn, beans, pumpkin, squash, porridge, etc), clothes they wore (handmade clothing), and what life was like for children. Children were meant to be silent and still. Girls went to school until they could read and write, while boys continued on to a higher education. By 11 boys that weren't from wealthy families often went to work instead of college.

Finally, after coloring in their Connecticut worksheet, the kids made a praying mantis craft.

Karate Stripes, Pool Party, & Tie Dye!

Last week brought new stripes on the kids' karate belts. Their Sensei believes they will be ready for a belt test at the end of the month!

A fellow homeschooling mama hosted a "Not Back to School" party with over 55 homeschooling members. We joined for a short while and the kids had a lot of fun.

Towards the end of the week our co-op class met up once again. The kids were super happy to see their friends from this class again.

The kids had a tattoo station and were all "inked" up for our project. 

The project for the week was tie dying tshirts!

History & Science

We finally got to start our new Story of the World book! Jayden is particularly excited to be learning about the Middle Ages.

The first chapter was a review on the fall of Rome, including the division of Rome and the Barbarians that invaded it.

This year we are working our way through R.E.A.L. Odyssey Earth & Space in Science. Our first lab of the school year was about the amount of drinkable and undrinkable water on Earth.  We learned that 97% of the Earth's water is ocean water, 2.3% is ice water, 0.6% is water underground, and less than 0.1% is drinkable!

 

This led to a discussion on the importance of the water cycle as well as water conservation.

Math, LA, & Spanish

Last week in math Jayden worked on estimation, which is still part of his review. He went on to learn about prime and composite numbers.

Caitlin worked on addition facts and patterns. 

       

We are reading The Mysterious Benedict Society for Language Arts. This week we started working on week 1 of our Arrow subscription. The kids did their copy work and edited a passage I typed up that had grammatical errors in it.

We also had our first Teatime Tuesday! The kids were very excited to be doing it again. I'm going to pretend their excitement is about the books and poems we read, not the desserts and beverages they consume! ;)

Our topic this time was race. We discussed racial issues and what racism meant. It lead to a discussion on slavery and the Civil War before we called it quits for the day.  

 

In Spanish we worked on greetings for the week.
