My amazing boy!

Have I ever mentioned how much I love the kids' swim teacher? Seriously, every week all of the parents mention at least once how Miss Scarlett is so fabulous and there is no one else they will let teach their child(ren). I'm so on board with that. She is AMAZING!

You know who else is even more amazing?! My boy Jayden!!!!!!! He got to swim with NO FLOATS this week!

He started off with one incredibly loose float tied around his waist.

 This little lady watched him.

Work it buddy!
 This little lady smiled!

That splash was Jayden diving into the pool

Then I watched as Miss Fabulous Scarlett took off his float. He saw her do it. He raised his arms to let her take it off! But I guess it didn't register with him. He "chicken, star, squeezed" (Miss Scarlett's description of the swimming technique)  his tiny hiney over to the deep end.
  He was owning that pool!

He went back and forth from the deep end to the shallow end two full times before he realized he was floatless.
"Jayden I want you to go back to the shallow end doing <insert the name of some technique here>," said Miss Fabulous Scarlett.
Jayden, who was treading water in the deep end, frantically searched for his float before he finally sputtered, "Wait! Where's my float?! I need it!"

And Miss Fabulous Scarlett told him "You can have it back if you want but do you realize you've been swimming without it this whole time?"

And a huge smile came across that boys face! He was so proud of himself. We are SOOO proud of him. This was a boy who last year could not swim AT ALL!!!!! And he had several months off this year. And, and, and... well he is just amazing! <3
He continued owning that pool floatless. Then he told everyone he could think of about his latest accomplishment.

And as Jayden went with his daddy to get dressed, Little Miss Sunshine and I stood back and watched the senior citizen class do some water exercises. Cait even danced with them.
She got really into it until she realized the class was watching her and calling her beautiful.
Then she was too shy to continue!

Cait has been more into puzzles and educational games than worksheets these days which is fine by me.

She made a puzzle from Confessions of a Homeschooler

Adding with the abacus

Jayden had a map skills quiz in Geography. After completing this unit he is now able to:

  • Identify a compass rose
  • Identify north, south, east, & west
  • Identify/create map symbols
  • Recognize/use a map scale
  • Recognizes state borders
  • Identify/read/create map grids

He likes when I draw ridiculous looking stick figures on his papers!
100%!
We've spent a lot of time working on subtraction with borrowing.

In Grammar we worked on present tense verbs.

And for spelling Jayden used his dictionary to define his spelling words. (We broke this part up into two days)

School Time

During this last month Jayden has been working diligently onTime4Learning. The subjects that we use there include Math (1st grade level), Language Arts (2nd grade level), Language Arts Extensions (which has tons of topics that range from social studies - 2nd grade level), and Science (2nd grade level). His average grades are:

48 Learning Activities: 96%
3 Activity Quizzes: 100%
10 Lesson Quizzes: 95%
5 Chapter Tests: 90%

I gave Jayden a math placement test to see where he is placing amongst other first graders. I found a free assessment exam at Math Mammoth.com. Jayden scored an 86%! I am extremely impressed since we are only about 1/2 way through our 1st grade math curriculum on Time4Learning.

Caitlin is still amazing me with her work too.  She loves doing her worksheets.
In grammar Jayden learned about present tense.

He also learned how to properly write a title.
In Spelling he worked on finding spelling errors in the top paragraph and then used them in a sentence below.

In Math he had an addition with regrouping worksheet from Superkids.com. He only made 2 errors out of 20 problems.
For Geography he worked on map grids.

Indoor Playdate

It has been FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZING lately. The kids started getting cabin fever so I took them to our favorite indoor playground. Unfortunately school was out that day so it was packed. They played for almost 90 minutes before we called it quits.
